Field is built to keep your recordings yours. It has no servers of its own, collects no analytics, requires no account, and never sees your audio. Almost everything happens entirely on your device. This policy explains the few cases where information leaves it, and where it goes.
Recording, live sound identification, bird species identification, speech transcription, and all acoustic analysis run entirely on your device using Apple's on-device frameworks and models bundled with the app. Your audio is not uploaded for any of this.
If you grant location access, Field tags each recording with its coordinates, place name, and region so you can see your recordings on a map. This location data is stored with your recordings on your device (and in your own iCloud, if you enable sync — see below). It is not sent to us.
To note the conditions at the moment of a recording, Field requests current weather for the recording's location from Apple Weather (WeatherKit). This means the recording's coordinates are sent to Apple to return local conditions. This is handled by Apple and governed by Apple's Privacy Policy. It is the only case in normal use where a location leaves your device, and it goes to Apple, not to us.
If you enable iCloud Sync (a Field Pro feature), your recordings and their metadata sync across your devices through your own iCloud account, using Apple's CloudKit. This data lives in your private iCloud storage, managed by Apple under Apple's Privacy Policy. We have no access to it. Sync is off unless you turn it on.
Field Pro is a one-time in-app purchase processed by Apple. Field never sees or handles your payment information; purchases and any refunds are transactions between you and Apple.
Because your recordings live on your device (and, optionally, in your own iCloud), you control them. Deleting a recording in Field removes it from your device; if iCloud Sync is on, the deletion propagates to your other devices through your iCloud account. There is no server-side copy for us to retain, because there is no server.
Field is not directed at children and does not knowingly collect any personal information from anyone, regardless of age.
If this policy changes, the updated version will be posted here with a new effective date.
