Field. — field recording for iOS

A field recording tool for the people who listen to places.

Field. Detail view of a Stone Arch Bridge recording: waveform, soundmark control, location, acoustic descriptors, weather, and map.

Field 1.8: Pre-roll. August 2026.

Turn on Pre-roll and Field captures the few seconds before you tap record — so you catch the bird, the phrase, the moment you were already reacting to. A Field Pro option: Off, 3, 5, or 10 seconds, held in memory and never uploaded. Also in 1.8: clearer, more resilient iCloud sync.

Field. Soundmark candidate sheet: a Hotel lobby bar recording at Warehouse District with the expanded prompt, dot-cluster visualization, and Mark / Not now buttons.

Soundmarks find themselves.

Field listens to where you've been. When a recording sounds different from the others you've made in a place, it lets you know — and you decide whether to mark it.

The word comes from R. Murray Schafer's acoustic ecology, a framework for hearing places by what makes them sound like themselves.

Acoustic Fingerprint

Field measures every recording: loudness, true peak, dynamic range, spectral character, spaciousness, activity. Read it as a phrase ("warm and expansive," "steady and intimate"), or as numbers in any DAW that reads BWF metadata.

Similar Recordings

Pull up any recording and Field finds the others that sound like it — the same kind of acoustic moment from across your library.

Studio-Quality Capture

Record in WAV, AIFF, FLAC, ALAC, or AAC at up to 96 kHz / 32-bit. CD, Broadcast, and Studio quality tiers — you choose the resolution.

Live Sound Identification

On-device AI listens as you record and tags sounds in real time: birdsong, wind, rain, traffic, voices. Tags refine after each recording.

Live Transcription & Field Notes

On-device speech recognition runs as you record. Your spoken observations are transcribed live and saved alongside the audio.

Soundwalks

Record while walking and Field traces the route, then scans the audio for the moments that stand out from everything else you've recorded. Walked path lights up as you play it back.

Import from Other Apps

Bring existing audio into Field from Voice Memos, JustPressRecord, Files, or any audio app's share menu. Imports get the same automatic tags, fingerprints, transcripts, and Soundmark candidacy as native captures.

Record from Anywhere

Start a recording without opening the app — from your Apple Watch, a Home or Lock Screen widget, Control Center, or the Action Button. A Watch complication shows whether a recording's running and starts one from your wrist.

Also in Field
  • Export to Freesound — upload-ready exports with tags, license, geotag, and description in the format Freesound expects.
  • Auto-bookmarks — the strongest detections marked as you record, so you find events in long captures without scrubbing.
  • Geo-tagged by default — every recording pinned to its place, with name and region, shown on a map.
  • Weather & context — temperature, conditions, and time of day captured at the moment of recording.
  • Handcrafted themes — six, each tuned for the light and mood you're recording in.

Know the birds you're recording.

Field names the birds it hears, species by species — running entirely on your phone, with nothing uploaded. Bird identification is available only for recordings made in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Field's Species Detected panel: a Bewick's Wren (Thryomanes bewickii) identified from a recording, with a 2-second clip to play, matched on-device against species known in the area.

An American goldfinch, recorded in Field.

It runs on the phone, with no signal.

Sound ID, bird species, soundmarks, acoustic fingerprints — all of it computed on your device while you record, from your own library. No account, no upload, no server to wait for. The dawn chorus in a canyon with no bars gets the same treatment as a recording made at home.

Upgrade in the app.

Private by design.

Sound identification, transcription, and analysis run entirely on your device. Field has no servers and never sees your recordings. Everything stays on your device unless you turn on iCloud Sync, and even then, your sync runs through your own iCloud account, not ours.

Does Field identify birds?

Yes, with Field Pro — but only for recordings made in the San Francisco Bay Area. Field names the birds it hears entirely on-device, and nothing is uploaded.

Is Field free?

Recording and the core features are free. Field Pro is a one-time purchase — no subscription — that adds pre-roll capture, folders & collections, iCloud sync, bird species identification, trimming, timestamped bookmarks, and more.

Does Field work offline?

Yes. Recording, sound identification, bird identification, live transcription, and acoustic analysis all run on your device. Only iCloud sync needs a connection.

What audio formats does Field record in?

WAV, AIFF, FLAC, ALAC, and AAC, at up to 96 kHz / 32-bit. You choose the resolution per recording.

Can I import recordings from other apps?

Yes — from Voice Memos, Files, or any app's share sheet. Imported audio gets the same automatic tags, acoustic fingerprints, and transcripts as recordings made in Field.

Does Field upload my recordings?

No. Field has no servers and never sees your recordings. Processing is on-device, and optional iCloud sync runs through your own iCloud account, not ours.
